Institutional Review Board (IRB)

03.25.13

A committee formally designated to approve, monitor, and review biomedical research involving humans. An IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications in (to secure approval), or disapprove research. This group review serves a role in the protection of the rights, safety and welfare of human research subjects. IRBs often conduct some form of risk-benefit analysis in an attempt to determine whether or not research should be done. Also known as an Independent Ethics Committee or Ethical Review Board.
