Patheon Talks Growing Business & Capacity Needs

Sr. Director of Scientific & Technical Affairs, David Kenyon, discusses the reasons for a second major capacity expansion

David Kenyon, senior director of scientific and technical affairs at Thermo Fisher’s Patheon Biologics spoke with Contract Pharma at the 2018 BIO International Convention about their continued increase in business and expansions.
 
Kenyon is based in St. Louis, MO, at one of the 4 sites within Patheon’s bio network. Other sites are located in the Netherlands, Australia, and Princeton, NJ.
 
Kenyon explained that there in an increasing volume of business in the biologic space, with pressure on the company to provide integrated solutions involving both drug substance and drug products together.

The requests have put a strain on capacity, which is why even though all 4 sites were expanded within the last few years. Patheon is now again doubling capacity at their St. Louis site for the second time. The $50M investment will add about 65,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space, upstream and downstream suites, as well as space to add an additional suite. There will also be shelf space available for future capacity expansions.
