Sanofi announced plans to close research operations in Toulouse at a meeting with 50 of the site’s employees, according to a Bloomberg report. The company also plans to end research at its Montpellier site. The closures would eliminate 800 jobs and will affect support functions and jobs at its Pasteur vaccine division. Previously announced measures would lead to as many as 2,500 job losses in France.

Sanofi is reorganizing its French operations in an effort to cut $2.5 billion in costs. The company began restructuring research operations following last year’s $20.1 billion acquisition of Genzyme Corp., at which point Sanofi closed a site in Bridgewater, NJ, which employed approximately 1,000 people.
